In 1993, a client came to us on behalf of Crayola. The crafters of childhood creativity needed a lead free alloy for a new jewelry making art kit they wanted to produce. At the time, only one lead free alloy was standard, and Crayola wanted something safer for children.
We created a sample alloy and sent it off to their lab for testing. After a few rounds of adjusting our formulas and retesting the product, Crayola still wasn’t satisfied. In fact, none of the metal companies they’d reached out to had been able to create an alloy that passed their child safety requirements. They were ready to throw in the towel when we asked to see the lab results. One glance told us that it was antimony in our alloy that was a problem. What Crayola actually needed was a lead free, antimony-free alloy, which was relatively unheard of at the time. With this knowledge under our belt, we swapped out the antimony and created a new alloy using tin, bismuth, silver and copper. Crayola was thrilled. Even better, our popular MPK alloy was born.
